OCTOBER GOSSIP PAGES
October 29, 2000
For several months I have been receiving damning email from a "Becky Rockhold Powers" mostly trying to defend the street super. Today in the Quincy Herald Whig I see that she has only now married Kent. The only thing can say to rest my case is this. First, it is a good idea that she is a high school graduate and a gem City Graduate and has a good job. Because the last line says it all, like father, like son, he is a Highland graduate. There was no mention of any college or a job anywhere.
I find it totally ironic that the Chamber of Commerce rightfully awarded Mr. Farr, the model citizen award. The reason it is ironic as the City, which he was awarded for being dedicated too has steadfastly refuse to do anything to the street to his house and force him to drive on a dirt road. I wonder if the Chamber is going to scam all the "Coroporate" members again this year as the Chamber has done the last four years. You know, locker room Jim, where you promise to put out a business directory each year for more money and then defraud them. I can remember when the Chamber went ballistic when a calendar promoted took money and then didn't print the calendars.
I don't know Mr. Hutchins, the President of the La Grange Foundry, but he started the history of the foundry several years after it as built. No big deal, but when you do history, you should start at the beginning even if you just mention it and go on to where you want. The other thing I take exception to, is that he stated that it is hard to find high quality employees. Evidently his history lesson didn't include the time Gardner's tried to go to Oklahoma and build a foundry to close this one only to find that the best workers were here in La Grange. It cost Gardner's millions to learn that lesson that this President seemed to have missed. Plus, after the gambling boat gets going, the foundry will not be the largest employer according to the figures being bantered about.
How many people in Lewis County are willing to add a 20% increase to their taxes. A letter to the Canton editorial wanted the voters to forget the mistakes made in the past. I am sorry to say to the person that just came around, that, there were no mistakes made. The Lewis County School Board "DID IT ON PURPOSE". It was no mistake that "pave my drive free" and others deliberately chose to close the La Grange School. The Lewis County School Board deliberately chose to put those children in a dilapidated school. They knew exactly what they were doing and it was totally on purpose. No mistakes were made. The taking of the La Grange was coldly calculated over 30 years ago, and pave my drive free and no prayer here hammered the last nail in the coffin to close the La Grange School.
October 28, 2000
Prayers should be on order for Patricia Cottrell and Jeanie Farr, both who are in hospitals. Sorry (no prayer here).
Speaking of (no prayer here), I keep hearing rumors that he and (pave my drive free) do not plan to run for office next term. That will be an excellent idea for the people of La Grange. Like the cockroaches they are, who only come out at night and hold their secret meetings with their puppet Mayor and four Councilmice, they have held the people of La Grange hostage for over six years to get their gambling boat. Like Clinton, they have taken the office of mayor and Council of the City of La Grange to its lowest level in the history of the town. Thirty years ago, cockroaches who would have sold out their school and violated the City Ordinances and the Charter of La Grange, they would have been run out of town. But, like the four mice, the new people of La Grange have let them slide.
Now that they have sold out our school so THEIR children can go to a better school, (Highland), that can now offer THEIR children so much more, AND, now that they have their gambling boat for their retirement, why hang around? 187 people voted for a puppet mayor and two people who sold them out twice, out of 700 voters and the mayor is tickled to death.
The new sign up for Mayor and a Councilman from each ward will be in the paper soon. Will the people of La Grange vote for the puppet again, or someone honest to do the job? Will there be three people to run for Councilmen that will not be like the three mice that are there now? I will never ever forget that one night when I had the confrontation with no prayer here and pave my drive free. The three mice hid so far back n the corner, I thought they were trim on the woodwork. Scared to death. Mike Lowe. David Burbridge. Roger Sherwood. When you have Councilmice like that, how can you fight for the rights of the people of the town?
Once I get it all scanned in, I will add two excellent additions to this page. Once is about the Park Ranger and what the word perjury means. And, then other is a lot of aerial photos of the City. Mr. Tonnies took me flying with him the other day while he took pictures and was nice enough to allow me to go to and use my digital camera. I took over 80 pictures from all angles. All I have to do now is get past this three day garage sale. I think every body and their brother came today though.
October 27, 2000
Started our garage sale today ad over a hundred cars came. Posted a sign to everyone that stops in to notify them that the City and the Street Super refused to fix the road up the hill, even though it is a City Street. Just want everyone who drives up the hill know what kind of Mayor and Street Super we have.

Slowly getting things back up to speed. With our huge garage sale coming up and getting ready for it, time has been on the short side. After this weekend, the Gossip page will be back to updates every other day. Be patient. Stop filling my email box up. This way of publishing the Gossip Page over the two columns won 5 to one.
We have set up a website so that people who sell on Ebay or other auctions can have a place to put their pictures. If you need a place call me.
My neighbor lady went to the hospital the other day for heart problems I believe. Bob had to PAY to get a load of rock on the CITY STREET going to his place as his ole buddy the street super is too lazy to put some of the city rock on. For the past ten years, I have been rocking the road and grading it and smoothing it out and cleaning the snow off. Too bad the Mayor and Council won't help a man who has worked for the City for years and donated years of overtime for nothing and have the City screw him over like this. But, that is what 187 people voted for a do nothing Mayor and a screw you Council, just tickles the Mayor to death.
October 20. 2000
Received this email the other day.
Jerry, As a former City Administrator I really enjoyed reading the Gossip pages. It brings back fond memories that I still have of City Government. I would recommend that the City hire and experienced City Administrator to handle the daily operations of the City, to include all city personnel and finance. There many good administrators out there and many would relish the opportunity to be the first that the City has. I wish you the best of luck, and keep the gossip pages rolling Mark J. -----
Now, this comes from a person who was searching the net and happened on the city of La Grange web pages.
I don't have to say more.
I have added the official website for the La grange Community Youth Center above. before you shut down your connection to the net, PLEASE go there and see what the youth Center is all about, how YOU can help, and what a great place it is for YOUR kids to go to.
SUPPORT the Youth Center.
Maurice Tonnies took me on a plane ride yesterday, I took 81 pictures of La Grange from the air. So, i will make a web page of La Grange from the air and post many of these pictures. These are from every direction as we flew in a complete circle of the town. See the boat from the air.
October 19, 2000
Looked like a trucker made a turn at the stoplight a little close. Several signs are smashed into the ground.
October 18, 2000
Since it will be awhile before the City sends me the accurate minutes of the Council meeting, the PNJ version will have to do. 1st off is the question of locking gas caps. WHY? The police have the cars with them, the others are supposedly locked in a shed. That only leaves the Street super parking the City truck on the City street in the way of everyone including the school buses trying to get around.
The one part about the Casino and the revenue to the City is somewhat confusing. Well, you see, the contract reads that the boat was to pay the City $100,000 per year if the boat HAD to ply the river, or $250,000 per year if it didn't have to move. Now the City is planning to use ALL $250,000 per year for police???
I noticed that the Fire chief was back for MO MONEY. What does the fire department need with an air compressor? What is wrong with using the street/water air compressor? And he was still griping about the fire hydrants.
Boy, does Councilman Rossiter like to suck up to the police department. Give them all new equipment, spend that money, send em out to harass everyone in town. Good Show.
If you pay City taxes, if you pay a water bill, if you pay a sewer bill, why does the City charge for water and sewer hookups? The electric company doesn't, the gas company doesn't, the telephone company doesn't, why does the City? And the gas, electric and phone run service onto your property before any charge is to you.
Proposition A: Billboard advertising. First who cares, but they help find places for me. But, who are for this new law?
The Sierra Club, (they are against any commercial)
Silver Dollar City, (they have all their signs up and don't want
any competition)
Tan-Tar-A, (Same as Silver Dollar City)
Missouri Parks association, (they are exempt and can put signs
anywhere anyhow).
Mo Parks & Recreation Assoc, (Same thing)
So the ones prompting this law either already have all the signs the want, or don't want anymore competition, or are already exempt anyhow.
Proposition B: Campaign Finance law. This was promoted by all the people who had no chance in hell to getting elected to any office and couldn't get any one to donate to their campaign, so they want a law that makes you through various taxes support their cause or election whether you want to or not.
AND THEN the C-1 School board wants to raise your taxes 28%. A full 28% increase in your taxes. All of a sudden they now find out that the Ewing school isn't in as good as shape as the La Grange school still is.
Everyone in town should call Fred (no prayer here) Wiewel and Ralph (pave my drive free) Martin for this chance to vote to increase your taxes 28% so their kids could go to Highland. Fred's is 655-4335 and Ralph's is 655-4654. Call them and thank them. Then ask where the Project brighter Future money went. maybe they can donate that to the school district.
October 16, 2000
Well, we are now back up and running at a new server that has guaranteed us all the space we need. We are slowly getting the site back up and going again.
It is hard to believe that it has been 4 weeks since the last update, my how time flies. Seems just like yesterday. A lot of stuff has happened in those four weeks, but that is all water under the bridge now.
I wonder why the Lewis County School District hasn't been promoting the new 28% property tax increase for everyone? And there is another item to vote on called Proposition B. This is where someone wants to pass a law that makes you send your political contribution to someone else so they can dole it out to everyone equally, essentially making you donate your money to the candidate running against the one you want elected. AND then, the Proposition on Billboards. Only the places that already have all the billboards up and grandfathered and the State Parks who are exempt and the Environmentalists are against Billboards. Nobody else cares.
We took some profits out of the stock market and decided to experiment. We bought a tractor trailer load of Sears merchandise and have a garage sale. Since my wife retired from the Driftwood, I thought she needed something to do. Some big surprise was that a 48 foot trailer holds more than you can imagine. Fortunately I had just built a new big building and it just has enough room to hold it all. There is so much stuff, we decided to call it JMART.
The gambling boat seems to be coming along swimmingly. It looks like though the rains are going to slow things up a bit. I was looking at a set of plans the other day and even though when you drive by and it looks big, the plans show just a small part will be the gambling part. About twice the size of the old Pete's Boat House. But there are a whole lot of rest rooms and counting rooms and offices. There is a small area for a restaurant and a smaller area far a bar. It makes you wonder how they will get people to come back that like to do other things too.
